How the AI Face Matching Works

Curious what actually happens when you hit "Run Paternity Test"? Here's the honest, plain-English version: how the AI checks photo readiness, processes selected photos privately, measures visible resemblance, and keeps the result firmly in just-for-fun territory.

Step 1: Face detection

When you upload a photo, an in-browser model scans it to find a face and draw a box around it. If it can't find a clear face โ€” or finds several โ€” it flags the photo so you can swap it. This is why a clean, single-face photo works best.

Step 2: Landmarks and alignment

Next, the model places dozens of facial landmarks โ€” points on the eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, and jawline. It uses these to straighten and crop the face to a standard size, so a tilted or off-center photo doesn't throw off the comparison. Consistent alignment is what makes two faces actually comparable.

Step 3: Turning a face into numbers

The aligned face is converted into a face descriptor โ€” a list of numbers that captures its geometry. Faces that look alike produce descriptors that sit close together; faces that look different sit far apart. Comparing two faces becomes a matter of measuring the distance between their descriptors.

Want the deeper dive?

We break the whole pipeline down with analogies in how AI face matching works (in plain English).

Step 4: Scoring the resemblance

We translate that distance into a friendly resemblance score and a verdict, and we pair it with a reliability level based on photo quality and how clear the match is. If you add the mom, the child is compared against both parents so we can show which side the resemblance leans.

How private processing works

Dad or Mad may run quick photo-readiness checks in your browser, then uploads selected photos for private AI processing when you generate a preview or full report. Saved scans can be revisited or deleted from the product. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Why it's for fun

Face matching is great at one job โ€” measuring how similar two faces look. It is not genetics. Children's faces change, lighting and angle move the numbers, and family resemblance is gloriously unpredictable. So enjoy the verdict, share it widely, and read can a face really tell you who a child looks like? for the honest limits.

Frequently asked questions

Does the AI use my photos to train itself?

No. Selected photos may be uploaded for private AI preview or report generation, but they are not used to train Dad or Mad models.

What makes the AI more or less confident?

Photo quality is the biggest factor: clear, front-facing, well-lit images with one face produce the most reliable read. Blurry, angled, or multi-face photos lower the confidence.

Can it really tell who a child looks like?

It can tell you how similar the faces look, which is genuinely fun and often convincing. It cannot determine genetics or parentage โ€” that's not what face matching does.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser, and most people use it on their phones.

Give it a whirl

It takes about a minute. Upload, analyze, share the verdict.
