Face-matching tools are fun and often convincing. But how much can a face actually tell you? Here's the honest answer.

Humans are wired to spot resemblance — it's why a family photo can make a whole room say "wow, same smile!" AI face matching is good at the same trick. But there's a big gap between looking alike and being related, and it's worth being honest about it.

What a face can tell you

• How visually similar two faces are, feature by feature.
• Patterns that feel like family — a shared nose shape, similar eye spacing, a matching jawline.
• A fun, shareable score that's often surprisingly persuasive.

What a face cannot tell you

• Genetic relationship. Looks are a weak proxy for DNA. Resemblance is not proof of parentage.
• Who someone will look like later. Faces change with age, especially in childhood.
• Anything legal or medical. Only an accredited DNA test can establish biological relationships.

Two reasons looks deceive

First, unrelated people can look strikingly alike — the world is full of doppelgängers, and studies of lookalikes have found people who share facial features without sharing close DNA.
