At What Age Do Babies Start to Look Like Their Parents?

That squishy newborn face is a work in progress. Here's roughly when a child's features settle — and why the resemblance verdict keeps changing.

If your newborn looks like a tiny, slightly grumpy stranger, you're not imagining it. Faces change enormously in the first few years, and the parent a baby resembles can flip more than once before things settle. Here's a rough timeline.

Birth to 3 months: the puffy phase

Newborn faces are shaped by the journey out: swelling, a flat nose bridge, and chubby cheeks are the norm. Eye color is often undecided. Any resemblance read at this stage is highly provisional — enjoy it, but don't tattoo it anywhere.

3 to 12 months: features wake up

As swelling fades and fat pads shift, the nose, cheeks, and chin start to take on more individual character. Many babies' eye color stabilizes somewhere in this window. This is often when relatives start confidently (and contradictorily) declaring who the baby looks like.

1 to 3 years: the face takes shape

Toddlerhood brings a longer face, a more defined nose, and a jawline that's actually a jawline. Resemblance becomes more stable here, though it can still favor different relatives than it did at birth.

Childhood and beyond: still not final

Even after the toddler years, faces keep maturing — and puberty reshapes them again. Plenty of people resemble a parent more as adults than they did as kids. Resemblance is never truly 'done.'
